Trends Audio TA-10 Amplifier Modifications

Side View of the Board

Just above you see the jumper pins (J2- RL) and the empty pads where the volume pot was removed.

On the left of the photo you can see the new Jantzen input caps. In the middle of the board are the new Panasonic FM series 1200uF 16V tank caps. These replace the stock Elna 220uF caps. The Elnas are nice caps, but bigger values at this point really help the amp. Supply voltage becomes more stable, resulting in better dynamics, a stronger sounding bass and wider soundstage The FM series caps are very good at reducing RF noise on the power rails, too. If you can't find the Panasonic FM series, then try the FC series, they are easier to find. Or any good low ESR electrolytic cap. The lead spacing is 2.5mm. 8mm diameter caps fit perfectly here. You may be able to squeeze fatter caps in. Values larger than 1200uF can be used, if they will fit.

To the left and right of the caps are my fancy hand made copper RFI shields. Aircore inductors make wonderful little transmitting antennas, sending nasty RFI out and all around the amp. We don't want that, do we? Nooo. Look at that big Jantzen cap on the right rear. Think it will pick up stray RF? You bet it will! The copper shields prevent that.

The shields are made from thin copper foil bought in a craft shop. Anything similar should do the trick. The sheets where very easy to trim, roll up and solder. You can also see a small wire soldered to the bottom of each. These wires are connected to the ground point on the SMD diodes. This provides a path to ground for the RF picked up by the shields. Both diode ends are connected to ground here, so just solder to the closest point. You can see a top view of the solder point on this page. I left the shields open at the top for airflow, though I doubt it really helps.
