Trends Audio TA-10 Amplifier Modifications

Adding a new volume pot and rerouting the input lines.

new volume pot

Here you see that a new volume pot has been added. In this case a Panasonic 50K log pot. The stock TA-10 volume control is an ordinary cheap pot. It works OK, out we would like something better. The little Panasonic pot fits nicely, and is of good quality. You might be able to squeeze a Noble of Alps blue in here, but I doubt it, that trim pot will get in the way.

Removing the old pot is the most difficult part of this modification. You have to unsolder and remove 6 very stubborn legs. You may end up burning the board or lifting the solder pads. I did! No worries, you won't need them. Just keep heating and rocking the old pot. Eventually it will come out. If you are retaining the original pot, see the wiring diagram below. If you are not using a pot in the amp (you have a preamp), you can connect your new input wires directly to the jumper pins. You don't need to connect the cable shields at this end if you don't use a new pot. The shields connected to the pot as shown above is to give the volume pot a ground.

There is more about this new wiring and the reason for it on this page.

This is the jumper for bypassing the pot and also where we reroute the input signal. The actual pins are not numbered, I've added them to the diagram for the sake of clarity.
If you are going to use no pot or a new pot, bring your signal into pins 3-LR. If you want to reroute the input signal but keep the stock volume control, come into pins 1-LR and leave the jumpers on 3 and 4.
